anal fissure question by Willy Combs: Ways to soften extremely hard stool?
I'm a weight lifter and I take weight / muscle gaining supplements 5 days a week. However my stool has been extremely hard lately to the point where when I use the bathroom, it comes out very hard and causes me to get an "anal fissure" and makes my anus bleed. I know it's not cancer or anything because I've been to the doctor years ago for the same reason (except it was due to a very poor diet, no exercise, holding it, etc.) however I exercise everyday now, drink 1 gallon of water, and eat semi healthy.

What should I do to soften it? I know they make "Benefiber" which is supposed to make you go, but does fiber also SOFTEN your stools too? Is there anything I can take naturally that'll soften my stools, like prunes or something? I do NOT want to take medical stool softeners everyday or anything or stop taking my supplements.

Having the urge to use the bathroom isn't a problem, but when it comes out rock hard and causes me to bleed, that is a very big problem.

Thanks for your help :)

I have a similar problem. Try a stool softener (I was going to suggest Dulcolax, but I think they may have changed their medicine, so just look for the store brand bottle with "Stool Softener" on it), but make sure you ask your doctor first. It says on the bottle to wait 2 hours before taking any other medicines. And I don't need to take it regularly, just one when I feel uncomfortable, and then in about 12 to 36 hours, it comes very easily. Good luck. :)

P.S.: I know how uncomfortable this problem is, and you really are best off taking real medicine. My doctor told me to take Miralax, but it was... overkill on my body. Your problem sounds a bit worse, so powdered fiber isn't out of the question.

your diet is not in balance and you are most likely overusing protein supplements. Fiber will cause your stools to soften and be more regular. Good healthy sources of fiber are whole grains, beans, raw veggies, crunchy fruits, whole-grain fiber-rich cereals. You should back off of your weight/muscle supplements and work on your diet and getting your body healthy and regular. You may benefit from some milk of magnesia as a short term solution to help clear out the hard stool you now have, until your healthier diet with lots of fiber has a chance to start working. There is no use working on your muscles if you aren’t taking care of the rest of your body!! Once you have cleaned up your diet & mapped out a healthy plan & once you have been comfortably regular for at least a week, then try adding your supplement in and see what the response is in your guts. If your stool hardens up again, then you need to discontinue those supplements as they are doing more harm than good.
